Melodifestivalen 2010
Mar 14th
So, I finally have had a chance to see “Swedish Pride” in full effect with something called Melodifestivalen. This is the precursor to Eurovision (the winner goes to represent Sweden there).
There are some rules to the songs (surprising!). They have to be original (unlike Idol), have to be under 3 minutes, also the last bit of the song needs to be an octave or note higher, you know, because it’s more effective that way, as well as you can be any age. Songs cannot be sold before the end of the competition either. I’m sure there are other rules, I just don’t know them. Remember, this was my first experience seeing this!
It’s a 6 week long competition where the people vote (how socialist eh?) on who goes forward. Unlike Idol, there are not judges, just hosts. The 6th week is the final week, and boy do they put on a show!
Anyway I was lucky enough to see the top 10 acts and the who gets to go forward. Unlike most competitions, there are voting “groups/delegations” which represent other countries (France, Denmark, Norway, etc) as well as sections in Sweden (Stockholm, Malmö, Luleå, etc). Each of these regions award points to each song/artists starting at 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12 points. Yes, it is possible for someone not to get ANY voted… brutal eh. This is worth 50% of the final vote.
Then comes the peoples vote, worth another 50%, but in one HUGE bulk value starting at 11, 22, 44, 88, 110 and 132.
In the end, there can only be one and Anna Begendahl won with a song titled “This Is My Life”. Personally, I was hoping Eric Saade would have won with his song called “Manboy”. It’s got a catchy hook which will definitely hit the clubs of Stureplan this summer! JOY! Plus, it’s pretty lame, so it would be even better if it won! And yes, come Monday morning, I plan to annoy EVERYONE at the office with it… by singing, listening and humming the chorus!
Personally, it was an interesting experience. It was like Idol, but people actually care… Actually, more than care, people get SOOOO worked up over it, as they represent Sweden in a few months. Now if only Sweden could get this worked up about hockey for soccer!
Well, without further a-du, here are the songs that were performed.
Song 1 – Darin – “You’re Out Of My Life”
Song 2 – Pernilla Wahlgren – “Jag Vill Om Du Vågar”
Song 3 – – “We Can Work It Out”
Song 4 – Timoteij – “Kom”
Song 5 – Peter Jöback – “Hollow”
Song 7 – Jessica Andersson – “I Did it for Love”
Song 8 – Salem Al Fakir – “Keep On Walking”
Song 9 – Anna Bergendahl – “This Is My Life”
Song 10 – Eric Saade – “Manboy”

The Swedish Immigration Process
Mar 9th
So, after almost 8 weeks, I have FINALLY finished navigating the fire and brimstone of the maelstrom called Skatteverket. 8 weeks of my life that have been highly stressful and frustrating part of my life.
Back in December 2009, I decided to take a position in Stockholm as a Data Warehouse specialist for the company I used to work for in Vancouver (sister company). The immigration process was so simple and quick, I was impressed. Able to renew my passport and have my working visa approved and sent back to me in 4 business days. Monday applied for a new Canadian passport, Thursday I was all set with my working visa, in my passport, in my hand. I quickly found out this was all just smoke and mirrors to hook you in. Once you’ve bitten, oh, you’re on for a ride!
Once I got here in January, I went to Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Office) right away, January 12th to be exact in an attempt to get my Personnummer (Swedish Personal Number). Normally it takes between 2-3 weeks (or so I was told) when I dropped off my application.
Time passes and it’s 4 weeks and STILL no word from Skatteverket. So I go down to their office to find out what’s up. Oh, it hasn’t been processed, it’s still in the backlog and could be another 2 weeks to process. Well we’re into February and I haven’t been paid for January yet, because I don’t have a bank account (I need a personnummer for that). Little irritated, but whatever.
Now 2 more weeks pass, STILL no word from Skatteverket… So I call them up. Looks like they couldn’t verify my address… and they failed to call me and inform me about this. It “must have been overlooked” was their reply. Well, now I’m pissed because it’s end of February, I cannot get paid (again) and am moving that weekend. They said they would mail me the info to my new address after I move.
Now it’s March 3rd, and 50 days from the day I applied for my personnummer I FINALLY get it… by phone. I called the guy up, asked what was going on and finally got it! Wicked, now to get a bank account so I can get paid! Remember, without this number you cannot do ANYTHING. Everything you do or want requires it. Gym memberships, internet connections, bank accounts, membership cards at the store…. EVERYTHING.
Off to the bank (Handelsbanken) and I found out I need to go BACK to Skatteverket to get a Personbevis to prove to the bank who I am. Funny how that was not mailed to me, but some other proof was. So I go back to Skatteverket and explain that I need a personbevis, and after some explaining about why and what for (and them saying it will take a month to get proper ID… blah blah blah) they print me what I need.
I go back to Handelsbanken with my paperwork in hand to open an account… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! I need someone with Swedish ID to verify who I am until I get my ID… which the BANK issues. So you need ID to get a bank account and Swedish ID, but cannot get either without Swedish ID…. It’s like what came first, the chicken or the egg? Either case I don’t care, I just want my bank account to get paid.
So I go back to the office to “borrow a Swede” to open my account up. I really should have just picked-up random cute Swedish blonde to help me, but I didn’t have the time or patients. One of my co-workers helped me open the account. Papers are all signed and then…. one more thing…. I NEEDED A PHOTO! They forgot to tell me I’d need one for Swedish ID. Unlike BC where they take the photo, you have to provide it here. So I had to come back the NEXT day to drop that off. Thank god I have a few photos with me for travel visas.
So yeah, now I have most of my paperwork together. It’s been a LONG 8 weeks… Actually it would have been a lot easier if the personnummer was also issued at the same time with my work permit. That would have made sense, but unfortunately the Swedish government authorities (Immigration and Tax) really don’t talk to each other…. AT ALL.

Canada Strikes GOLD!
Feb 15th
No matter how you say it, the curse has been broken! Alexandre Bilodeau on the mens freestyle mogules, was able to capture Canada’s first gold medal on home soil! WOOT WOOT!
This was what I woke up to this morning when I was checking the news from the events while I slept (+1 GMT remember). Here is the article from CTVOlympics.ca, with a nice photo album to go with it. Actually, the Canadian Post is gonna be producing a stamp to honour Alexandre Bilodeau for the amazing effort! The stamp is pretty cool actually! Check out some of the photos here! You know Canada Post was ready for this!
Actually, just before I went to bed, Canada also won a bronze in women’s 3000m speed skating. Christina Groves was able to secure her medal by 0.02s of a second! PURE INSANE! Here is the article from CTVOlympics.ca with lots of photos as well.
I must say it was nice to come into work, and mark 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze on my scrum whiteboard for Canada’s Olympics Medals.
Oh, I should also say, Sweden also got it’s first gold medal in women’s 10km free cross country skiing from Charlotte Kalla. So at the time of this, Sweden has 1 gold. Congratulations. Yet again, here’s more information and photos from CTVOlympics.ca.

Oh, Hi! I Keep Forgetting…
Jan 31st
So yeah, it’s quite obvious I haven’t been updating my blog! How can you tell? Well, the lack of blog entries probably! That and no new photos. So here’s what’s been happening since the last update!
1. NYC was pure amazing. I have some awesome photos which I am still working through (shear laziness). It is something everyone needs to experience once in their life. The city never sleeps, the food is amazing, and it was overall a great vacation.
2. I’m back in cold Stockholm, Sweden now, working. Work has been going ok, though, I do need to find a new place to live by March 1, 2010. LONG story, and really don’t want to get into it.
3. I love snow! Did I mention that yet? It keeps snowing almost every day, and I love it. I need to take an evening this week and go snowboarding at Hammarbybacken. It’s been a while (well, since I went home) since I’ve been.
Anyway, here are some photos from NYC, more panoramic shots, one from Central Park looking south towards the downtown and one from Liberty Island of Manhattan Island (the Battery). Enjoy!

Photos from Utö
Nov 18th
Back in October, I had the opportunity to go to Utö in the Swedish archipelago. This was an overnight team building exercise for the who IT department. There was some free time to take some photos, and these are a few I was able to snap.
This is the entrance bay at Utö. This is where the boats dock to arrive. This shot was taken from the hotel that oversees it.
Around the hotel that overlooks the bay is where these Swedish flags stand tall.
Closeup shot of the Swedish flag on Utö.
Utö was an old mining island, abandoned long time ago.
This is the old mill that would create flower for the miners on the island to make bread with.

Stockholm at Night
Nov 10th
This is one of my first night shoots in Stockholm. This took place October 11th, 2009, on a very cold and snowy evening. I started off downtown at Sergels Torg, attempting to get a “night shot” of cars driving around it, slowly, working my way south through Gamla Stan. As I’m still learning about photography, not all the photos turned out amazing, but here are a few of the ones that I think turned out decent. These photos have gone through photoshop and I have put “other” effects on them to “enhance them”.
I first started off at Sergels Torg, trying to get a motion blur of cars driving by. Unfortunately it was already too late at night (around 7:00pm) and most of the traffic already was home. I’ll have to head back soon and re-try this photo, maybe around 4:30 to 5:00pm as work gets out.
Next I was off to Gamla Stan and took photos of the Swedish Parliament, the Sveriges Riksdag. This was a pretty easy shot too do. No traffic, no interference, just a simple shot. I ended up cleaning the color out as it was very yellow (like the next Gamla Stan shot), and I wanted to try for a clean, white look.
This was taken from south of the Parliament buildings, north of Gamla Stan. I was trying to get an older, rustic feel, unfortunately there were some signs still showing up in the photo (notice the green sign in the middle). I’m really pleased on how this turned photo turned out.
This is the photo of Sankta Gertruds Kyrka (St Gertrude’s Church) was able to actually pick up stars; unfortunately at this web resolution, it doesn’t show all that clear. However, I can put up a higher resolution one later. This is the southern most Church in Gamla Stan and can clearly be seen from Söder.
Please leave your feedback if you have any about my photos. Definitely want to learn more about photography, digital editing and image composition, and from what I’ve read and researched, it’s all about practice and understanding what you are doing, with more practice!

Well, this is my first post, in my new blog, www.ettfoto.com.

So far I’ve been living in Stockholm, Sweden for 5 months and have decided to come stay here and come on as staff with my current company. So come January 2010, I’ll be a new resident.
Lots is going on right now, so please be patient as I add more content, both blog entries and photo entries.
