So recently I had the privilege to travel through Germany and unfortunately my only stop was in Berlin. However, I did manage to get several awesome photos.
So far, this is the only one I’m ready to publish. I will add more soon! As well as photos from Austria, Croatia, Montenegro, Copenhagen, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Helsinki! I promise!

So I was lucky enough to spend this easter in Belgium this year, and I must say, Belgium sure did deliver! Not only was it very ascetically beautiful as a country, it also has some of the worlds best indulgences: chocolate, beer, waffles and mussels! I really cannot compare this country to anything other than Homer Simpson’s magical animal.
Homer: Are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.
In this world wind adventure, I started in Brussels for 2 nights, then took the train to Gent for an evening. Next day took the train to Antwerp and stayed another evening and finally spend my last night in Bruges.
My personal highlight was Bruges. I loved that city… well after 6pm when the tourists went away. I remember walking form the train station to my hostel and hardly saw a soul. When I got to my hostel, check in, still a very quite city. Wandered off into the central part and BOOM, tourists everywhere! It was funny to see, but hard to get good photos because people were everywhere. I did end up taking a train towards Oostende in Belgium which is right on the North Sea and dipped my feet in. It was damn cold, but refreshing.
Over 1000 photos and 22GB of data later, I have my trip documented. Lots of the photos need to be touched up and fixed, but that will come in time.
Anyway, it was a great trip and awesome. I’ll get the photos up soon enough, I’m still going through them.

So, I finally have had a chance to see “Swedish Pride” in full effect with something called Melodifestivalen. This is the precursor to Eurovision (the winner goes to represent Sweden there).
There are some rules to the songs (surprising!). They have to be original (unlike Idol), have to be under 3 minutes, also the last bit of the song needs to be an octave or note higher, you know, because it’s more effective that way, as well as you can be any age. Songs cannot be sold before the end of the competition either. I’m sure there are other rules, I just don’t know them. Remember, this was my first experience seeing this!
It’s a 6 week long competition where the people vote (how socialist eh?) on who goes forward. Unlike Idol, there are not judges, just hosts. The 6th week is the final week, and boy do they put on a show!
Anyway I was lucky enough to see the top 10 acts and the who gets to go forward. Unlike most competitions, there are voting “groups/delegations” which represent other countries (France, Denmark, Norway, etc) as well as sections in Sweden (Stockholm, Malmö, Luleå, etc). Each of these regions award points to each song/artists starting at 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12 points. Yes, it is possible for someone not to get ANY voted… brutal eh. This is worth 50% of the final vote.
Then comes the peoples vote, worth another 50%, but in one HUGE bulk value starting at 11, 22, 44, 88, 110 and 132.
In the end, there can only be one and Anna Begendahl won with a song titled “This Is My Life”. Personally, I was hoping Eric Saade would have won with his song called “Manboy”. It’s got a catchy hook which will definitely hit the clubs of Stureplan this summer! JOY! Plus, it’s pretty lame, so it would be even better if it won! And yes, come Monday morning, I plan to annoy EVERYONE at the office with it… by singing, listening and humming the chorus!
Personally, it was an interesting experience. It was like Idol, but people actually care… Actually, more than care, people get SOOOO worked up over it, as they represent Sweden in a few months. Now if only Sweden could get this worked up about hockey for soccer!
Well, without further a-du, here are the songs that were performed.
Song 1 – Darin – “You’re Out Of My Life”
Song 2 – Pernilla Wahlgren – “Jag Vill Om Du Vågar”
Song 3 – – “We Can Work It Out”
Song 4 – Timoteij – “Kom”
Song 5 – Peter Jöback – “Hollow”
Song 7 – Jessica Andersson – “I Did it for Love”
Song 8 – Salem Al Fakir – “Keep On Walking”
Song 9 – Anna Bergendahl – “This Is My Life”
Song 10 – Eric Saade – “Manboy”

So, after almost 8 weeks, I have FINALLY finished navigating the fire and brimstone of the maelstrom called Skatteverket. 8 weeks of my life that have been highly stressful and frustrating part of my life.
Back in December 2009, I decided to take a position in Stockholm as a Data Warehouse specialist for the company I used to work for in Vancouver (sister company). The immigration process was so simple and quick, I was impressed. Able to renew my passport and have my working visa approved and sent back to me in 4 business days. Monday applied for a new Canadian passport, Thursday I was all set with my working visa, in my passport, in my hand. I quickly found out this was all just smoke and mirrors to hook you in. Once you’ve bitten, oh, you’re on for a ride!
Once I got here in January, I went to Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Office) right away, January 12th to be exact in an attempt to get my Personnummer (Swedish Personal Number). Normally it takes between 2-3 weeks (or so I was told) when I dropped off my application.
Time passes and it’s 4 weeks and STILL no word from Skatteverket. So I go down to their office to find out what’s up. Oh, it hasn’t been processed, it’s still in the backlog and could be another 2 weeks to process. Well we’re into February and I haven’t been paid for January yet, because I don’t have a bank account (I need a personnummer for that). Little irritated, but whatever.
Now 2 more weeks pass, STILL no word from Skatteverket… So I call them up. Looks like they couldn’t verify my address… and they failed to call me and inform me about this. It “must have been overlooked” was their reply. Well, now I’m pissed because it’s end of February, I cannot get paid (again) and am moving that weekend. They said they would mail me the info to my new address after I move.
Now it’s March 3rd, and 50 days from the day I applied for my personnummer I FINALLY get it… by phone. I called the guy up, asked what was going on and finally got it! Wicked, now to get a bank account so I can get paid! Remember, without this number you cannot do ANYTHING. Everything you do or want requires it. Gym memberships, internet connections, bank accounts, membership cards at the store…. EVERYTHING.
Off to the bank (Handelsbanken) and I found out I need to go BACK to Skatteverket to get a Personbevis to prove to the bank who I am. Funny how that was not mailed to me, but some other proof was. So I go back to Skatteverket and explain that I need a personbevis, and after some explaining about why and what for (and them saying it will take a month to get proper ID… blah blah blah) they print me what I need.
I go back to Handelsbanken with my paperwork in hand to open an account… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! I need someone with Swedish ID to verify who I am until I get my ID… which the BANK issues. So you need ID to get a bank account and Swedish ID, but cannot get either without Swedish ID…. It’s like what came first, the chicken or the egg? Either case I don’t care, I just want my bank account to get paid.
So I go back to the office to “borrow a Swede” to open my account up. I really should have just picked-up random cute Swedish blonde to help me, but I didn’t have the time or patients. One of my co-workers helped me open the account. Papers are all signed and then…. one more thing…. I NEEDED A PHOTO! They forgot to tell me I’d need one for Swedish ID. Unlike BC where they take the photo, you have to provide it here. So I had to come back the NEXT day to drop that off. Thank god I have a few photos with me for travel visas.
So yeah, now I have most of my paperwork together. It’s been a LONG 8 weeks… Actually it would have been a lot easier if the personnummer was also issued at the same time with my work permit. That would have made sense, but unfortunately the Swedish government authorities (Immigration and Tax) really don’t talk to each other…. AT ALL.

So today was a beautiful day in Stockholm…. Sunny and only -5˚C! I know, it’s pretty warm for winter in the frozen north. As well, with my new move to Södermalm, I needed to go out and take some pictures of the views that I now have. So, enjoy these panoramic photos!
So yeah, these were all taken from Södermalm towards Gamla Stan (Old Town). It’s an amazing view I get to go by everyday to work. A nice way to start my day I must say.

I’m sure you have heard about this mythical “Lucky Loonie”. For those who have, you are definitely missing out on some great Canadian facts and lore! Well, I’m gonna go to my trusty encyclopaedia of lore, Wikipedia and give you the lowdown on this “Lucky Loonie”
Well, this all started back back in the old times of 2002. It was the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, when the ice maker hid a Canadian loonie under centre ice. Well, what happened? Canada Men’s and Women’s Hockey Teams won GOLD! It was used to help the referees drop the puck on the centre of the face off circle (really?), but “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky was able to recover this loonie and it now sits in the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame! That is how the “Lucky Loonie” started.
Now, this has taken on many more forms.
In 2003, at the IIHF World Hockey Chapionships, between Canada and Sweden, Canada won GOLD!
In 2006, at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, at the curling rink, the ice maker there hid 2 loonies under the ends, and Brad Gushue and his team won GOLD!
This has also been used this against us. At the 2008 IIHF World Championships, Team Russia (Alexander Ovechkin) buried a “(un)Lucky Loonie” at the centre of the ice. When Russia beat Canada, 5-4 in overtime, Soviet Comrade Ovechkin dug it out.
I have even taken up this wise tail and always travel with a “Lucky Loonie” of my own. Right now it sits atop my passport. It was stamped 1987, the first year of the Loonie.
Well, I haven’t been able to see/hear anything if a “Lucky Loonie” has been placed at GM Place (Canada Hockey Place), but if it has been (or will be) I’ll be sure it gets posted here!

So, I was thinking last night while I was watching long track speed-skating. A certain word kept coming up, every race… Katrina Lemay Doan kept saying “lactic acid”, For those who don’t know, it’s that burning/filling feeling you get in your muscles. It’s an acid that builds up that needs to be flushed, formed from extensive muscle use.
Anyway, that got me thinking. Every time she says it, take a shot or drink your beer! I think I counted some 10-15 times she said it in one hour.
This can be applied to most other sports as well, but this really came out.
Here are some other ideas…
Just some random thoughts for making the olympics even THAT more exciting!

No matter how you say it, the curse has been broken! Alexandre Bilodeau on the mens freestyle mogules, was able to capture Canada’s first gold medal on home soil! WOOT WOOT!
This was what I woke up to this morning when I was checking the news from the events while I slept (+1 GMT remember). Here is the article from CTVOlympics.ca, with a nice photo album to go with it. Actually, the Canadian Post is gonna be producing a stamp to honour Alexandre Bilodeau for the amazing effort! The stamp is pretty cool actually! Check out some of the photos here! You know Canada Post was ready for this!
Actually, just before I went to bed, Canada also won a bronze in women’s 3000m speed skating. Christina Groves was able to secure her medal by 0.02s of a second! PURE INSANE! Here is the article from CTVOlympics.ca with lots of photos as well.
I must say it was nice to come into work, and mark 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze on my scrum whiteboard for Canada’s Olympics Medals.
Oh, I should also say, Sweden also got it’s first gold medal in women’s 10km free cross country skiing from Charlotte Kalla. So at the time of this, Sweden has 1 gold. Congratulations. Yet again, here’s more information and photos from CTVOlympics.ca.
